Police on Teusday reported that 40 Shiites members have been arrested while two officers have been shot when a protest organised by Shiites at the National Assembly turned violent.
The group, known as the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, broke into the National Assembly complex premises, resulting in an exchange with security operatives.
The Shi’ites broke down the first gate and proceeded to the second, which serves as the main entrance to the complex.
Although the security operatives on ground repelled the protest with gunshots fired into the air to disperse the protest.
The Shittes are demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky who has been on detention since December 2015.
Over 340 Shiites were killed by the army in December 2015 after the army accused the Islamic sect of blocking a road.
