At least 5 feared dead as flood ravage Yola

At least 5 people have been killed and hundreds of people displaced after a heavy rain in Jimeta area of Yola, Adamawa state.

The rain which started at sundown in Yola town on Thursday, extended to Jimeta where it became heavier as the day wore on, ceased for a few minutes and then poured down once more until Jimeta households not usually affected by flooding had a full dose of it.

The affected areas included Yolde-Pate, Jambutu and Loko in Yola South, Yola North and Song Local Government Areas of the state, respectively.

Speaking on the incident, the Yola north Local Government Council transitional chairman, Adamu Ibrahim, after accessing the damage caused by the flood said three children died in Yola North and over 20,000 houses submerged .

The deaths recorded in Yola North council area occurred in Kasuwa Buwu, Kofare and Bachure, which were the communities worst hit by the incident.

Adamu said:

We have never experienced this one to two hours of intensive rain and heavy flooding before. Many were rendered homeless. We have just seen a tailor shop where three sewing machines were swept away.

However, according to the Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency( ADSEMA), Dr Muhammed Suleiman, four to five children got drowned or swept away.
