Enraged youths on Monday set on fire a police station in Obowo Local Government Area, after an irresponsible policeman shot and killed an unarmed man.
The deceased identified as Ikenna Ukachi was shot and killed by the policeman at the EDS Plaza in Umuokeh,Obowo, who abandoned his rifle and took to his heels before the Mob could get to him .
The killing of the 25-year-old man angered some youths in the community and they marched to Otoko Police Divison to express their grievances.
The officers at the Otoko Police Division on sighting the mob fled their duty post for safety.
The mob reportedly ransacked the police station, took away weapons and other valuables and set it on fire .
Rabiu Ladodo, the commissioner of police Imo State, who confirmed the incident said 30% of the station was affected by the fire before it was extinguished.
The commissioner also said that police was making effort to recover arms and ammunition cratered away from the police station .
The trigger-happy policeman understands the gravity of his offence and had fled.
He has been declared wanted and I have directed that he should be hunted down and arrested.
He must face the full weight of the law. We have spread our dragnet, it is just a matter of time and he will be in custody, he said.
The Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha visited the scene of the incident on Tuesday and also paid a visit to the bereaved family in Umuebea, Umuoke Obowo.
He assured them that the killer policeman would be arrested and made to face the law.
He urged the police Commissioner to find the killer policeman and ensure that all those who took laws in their hands are arrested .
The Governor was accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Hon. (Engr) Gerald Irona, the Imo State CP, Ibrahim Ladodo, the Chairman Council of Tradition Rulers, Eze Samuel Agunwa Ohiri, the Special Adviser Security, Mr Raymond Nkemdirim, among other Government functionaries.
