Lagos police arrest armed robbery suspect in a church retreat, recover firearms

The Lagos state police command, on Saturday, arrested a suspected armed robber, Wasiu Kamarudeen, at a church’s retreat.

19-year-old Wasiu of No 8 Olaniyi street Iyalode Ilogbo, was said to have led a team of robbers to attack members of the St. Patrick Catholic Renewal Church, Jakande Opened Field during their church retreat yesterday, August 31st.

It was gathered that memebrs of the church contacted policemen attached to Ilemba Hausa Police Station, that one motorcycle was sighted conveying three passengers into the camp ground in a suspicious manner.

The police said the passengers mingled amongst the worshipers with the intent to dispossess worshippers of their valuables such as handsets, cash etc.

Policemen were reportedly deployed to the scene and Wasiu was arrested with a locally made short Gun with one live cartridge.

According to police spokesperson, Bala Elkana, their operational motorcycle with registration number OGUN AKM 749 WP was also recovered.

Elkana said the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) had launched a manhunt of the remaining two gang members.

“The passengers mingled with the worshipers who were attending a three-day retreat with intent to dispossess worshippers of their valuables such as handsets and cash.

 

“On the strength of the information, some patrol teams were deployed to the scene. The ring leader identified as Kamarudeen was apprehended but the other two escaped.”

Investigation is ongoing and the case will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed,” he said.
