Commercial drivers on Friday blocked the Kaduna- Abuja expressway in protest over the killing of one of their members by a police officer at a checkpoint near Masari U-Turn.

The driver of Peugeot J-5 who was on his way to Kaduna was allegedly shot and killed by the police officer around 5:00am.

An eyewitness said the incident occurred after the commercial bus driver refused to give N1000 bribe to the Police at the checkpoint.

The eyewitness claimed that the driver was shot after he offered N500 instead to the police officer.

After the death of the driver, his colleagues plying the highway emerged in their hundreds and barricaded the road, leading to a heavy gridlock.

The Kaduna State Commissioner for internal security, Samuel Aruwan assured motorists that the matter is being handled.

“Kaduna-Abuja Road gridlock around Olam Company. We are working and the road will be cleared in a jiffy.”
