Shut Down Edo House Assembly! Reps orders IGP.

The House of Representatives has directed the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and the Director-General of the Department of the State Security Service (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, to seal off the Edo House of Assembly.

This is coming after the House of Reps adopted the report of the committee set up to look into the crisis going on in the state Assembly.

Recall that on July 9 the House of Representatives deliberated on a motion seeking to take over the functions of the Edo Assembly, in line with the constitution.

A committee led by Abdurazak Namdas was constituted to look into the crisis rocking Edo House of Assembly and to make recommendations.

Shortly after examining the report of the panel on Wednesday, it was adopted by the lawmakers, who then asked the heads of the police and DSS to seal the Edo State house of Assembly .

As recommended in the report, Gov. Godwin Obaseka was asked by the Reps to issue a fresh proclamation within 7 days, that all actions and factions of the state Assembly are declared null and void till another proper inauguration is done.

The report also recommended that:

That all members of the Edo State House of Assembly, both those who have been inaugurated and those who have not been inaugurated should dissolve their factions in the interest of peace and stability of the House, with the view to moving the state forward.

That the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General, Department of State Services, should shut down the Edo State House of Assembly and provide adequate security to allay further fears of intimidation and threat as alleged by members-elect.

However, the Edo State House of Assembly, led by the speaker Frank Okiye, shortly after this issurance at Abuja, rejected the move by the Fed. Reps to shut the state House of Assembly down.

According to Okiye, he wondered why the Federal House of Representatives should even issue such order since they at the State House still allows the rule of law to prevail and peace exists amongst them.

He also made it known that they don’t have the right to shut the state House of Assembly down.
