Tariffs: China hits back, halts purchase of U.S. produce

China has ordered its companies to stop buying U.S. farm products in reaction to Washington’s latest round of tariffs on its exports.

This was made known in a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce

The ministry also said that Beijing would not rule out hiking imports duties on farm products dating back to August 3.

President Trump on Thursday proposed adding 10% tariffs on the 25-per-cent levies already imposed over the past year on 300 billion dollars’ worth of Chinese products from Sept.1.

When they take effect, all Chinese goods coming into the U.S. will be subject to punitive tariffs.

This is coming not long after the two sides restarted talks and may likely escalate the trade war between U.S and China as Beijing has pledged to respond if the U.S. insists on adding the extra tariffs.
