15-year-old Chikwendu from Anambra state ,who was forced by her family to marry a mentally challenged man, has returned to school yesterday October 8.
Chikwendu’s forced marriage sparked outrage on social media after a Facebook user shared her story in January .
She was forced to marry an older man named Izuchukwu Igwilo, who is also mentally challenged.
After her story went viral both offline and online , the state Commissioner For Women and Children affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, intervened and Chikwendu was saved from the Igwilos.
She was rehabilitated, trained in tailoring and empowered with other 100 Ndi Anambra by Industrial Training Fund, ITF.
Concluding the process of healing and rehabilitation, Chinwendu was today accompanied by the Honorable Commissioner, her elderly father and some staff of the ministry of women and children affairs to the school where she will continue with her education.
